GST office in Mumbai: CGST vs State GST

Every GSTIN in Mumbai is allotted either to the central authority (CGST Mumbai Zone, under CBIC) or to the state authority (Department of Goods and Services Tax, Maharashtra). The split is decided automatically at registration; you do not choose it. Your allotted jurisdiction appears on the GST REG-06 certificate under "Centre Jurisdiction" and "State Jurisdiction". Clarification notices (REG-03) and physical verification are handled by whichever authority your GSTIN is allotted to.

    Mumbai GST state code: 27

Every GSTIN issued in Maharashtra starts with the state code 27, followed by your 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z and a check digit. Example format: 27ABCDE1234F1Z5. If your business has branches in other states, each state needs its own GSTIN with that state's code.

Do you need to visit a GST office in Mumbai?

No. GST registration is filed online on gst.gov.in. A visit is needed only if Aadhaar authentication is not opted for and biometric verification is triggered at a GST Suvidha Kendra, or if the officer orders physical verification of your Mumbai premises. With Aadhaar e-KYC, most applications are approved without any visit.
