Udyam Registration is the Government of India's official recognition programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system on 1st July 2020 and is administered by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises through the udyamregistration.gov.in portal.
Once registered, a business receives a Permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-Certificate — a lifetime credential that becomes the KYC foundation for CGTMSE loans, GeM tenders, priority-sector lending, state subsidies, patent fee reimbursement, ISO certification support and dozens of other central and state schemes.
The registration is free on the government portal. Professional charges — like Taxpex's flat ₹499 fee — cover correct NIC-code selection, accurate investment / turnover mapping, Aadhaar e-KYC handling, and post-registration guidance on which schemes actually apply to your business.
Under the revised definition in effect since 1st July 2020, MSME classification is based on both investment in plant & machinery/equipment and annual turnover. The higher of the two decides the category.
| Category | Investment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹1 crore | Up to ₹5 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹50 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹50 crore | Up to ₹250 crore |
Any Indian enterprise engaged in manufacturing, production, processing, preservation of goods, or provision of services — whether a proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, private limited company, HUF, cooperative society, trust or association — can register under Udyam. There is no minimum turnover threshold; even a first-day freelancer can register with just Aadhaar and PAN.
Collateral-free loans up to ₹5 crore under Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE). Priority-sector lending with 1–2% lower interest rates. Access to Mudra loans (up to ₹10 lakh), Stand-Up India, PMEGP and SFURTI.
Protection under Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act — buyers must pay MSMEs within 45 days (or 15 days if no written agreement), else they lose the tax deduction on that expense. This has forced corporate India to clear MSME dues on time.
Capital subsidy on plant & machinery under CLCSS, patent registration fee subsidy up to 50%, ISO certification reimbursement, electricity duty exemption in many states, stamp duty concession on property, and preferential allotment in industrial estates.
Reserved quotas in Central and State PSU tenders. Automatic GeM (Government e-Marketplace) eligibility. TReDS invoice discounting so you get paid the same day at bank interest rates instead of waiting 60–90 days.
Udyam registration is a paperless process — no documents are physically uploaded. Only Aadhaar OTP-based verification is used, and PAN / GSTIN details are auto-fetched from Income Tax and GST databases via API.
The proprietor / managing partner / authorised signatory's Aadhaar number is entered on udyamregistration.gov.in. An OTP is sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile and verified in real time.
The enterprise PAN is entered and auto-validated against the Income Tax database. GSTIN, if applicable, is auto-fetched. For proprietorship, the proprietor's personal PAN is used.
Enterprise name (as per PAN), address, date of commencement, bank details, primary activity (manufacturing / service / trade) and NIC code are entered.
Latest ITR-based investment in plant & machinery / equipment and turnover figures are entered. For first-year enterprises, self-declared values are accepted subject to future validation.
On final submission, the URN is generated instantly and the e-Certificate is emailed to the registered address. No physical certificate is issued — the digital version is legally valid across all government portals.
Introduced by Finance Act 2023 and effective from 1st April 2024, Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act is arguably the most powerful MSME reform in a decade. It requires buyers to pay Micro and Small enterprises within 15 days (if no written agreement) or the period agreed in writing, capped at 45 days.
If payment is delayed beyond this window, the buyer loses the income tax deduction on that expense in the year of accrual — it becomes deductible only in the year of actual payment. This has forced corporate procurement teams to prioritise MSME dues to protect their own tax positions.
| Scheme | Benefit | Ministry |
|---|---|---|
| CGTMSE | Collateral-free loans up to ₹5 crore | MSME |
| PMEGP | 25–35% subsidy on new enterprise projects up to ₹50 lakh | MSME |
| Mudra Loan | Loans up to ₹10 lakh (Shishu / Kishor / Tarun) | Finance |
| Stand-Up India | SC/ST/Women entrepreneur loans ₹10 lakh–₹1 crore | Finance |
| CLCSS | 15% capital subsidy on plant & machinery up to ₹1 crore | MSME |
| SFURTI | Cluster-based subsidy for traditional industries | MSME |
| Patent Subsidy | 50% reimbursement of patent filing fees | MSME |
| ISO Reimbursement | Up to ₹75,000 reimbursement of ISO certification | MSME |
The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) is a government trust that guarantees loans given by banks and NBFCs to Micro and Small enterprises. The bank recovers up to 85% of the outstanding loan from CGTMSE if the borrower defaults — so it is essentially a collateral-free loan for the borrower and a low-risk loan for the bank.
Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is a single online portal where all Central and State government departments, PSUs and autonomous bodies procure goods and services. GeM turnover crossed ₹4 lakh crore in FY 2024–25, of which more than 55% went to MSMEs. Udyam registration is a mandatory KYC input for GeM seller registration.
