Documents Required for MSME Registration in 2025 — Full Checklist
Exact document and information checklist for Udyam (MSME) registration in 2025 — Aadhaar, PAN, GSTIN, bank details, NIC codes and entity-specific extras for proprietorship, partnership, LLP and Pvt Ltd.
Share
Udyam (MSME) registration is paperless — but it is not document-free. The portal asks for verifiable identifiers (Aadhaar, PAN, GSTIN) and self-declared business data (investment, turnover, employees, bank account, NIC code). Get one of these wrong and the certificate is technically invalid — banks will reject your loan application and large buyers can refuse to recognise you under Section 43B(h). This 2025 checklist covers exactly what you need, by entity type, with the why behind each requirement. With documents ready, our MSME registration service completes the filing the same day.

Quick note
Notice what's NOT on the list: no rent agreement, no electricity bill, no incorporation certificate, no partnership deed scans. Udyam is genuinely paperless — every verification happens via Aadhaar OTP + PAN / GSTIN database hooks.
1. Aadhaar — the keystone document
Aadhaar is the only login mechanism for the Udyam portal. Whose Aadhaar to use depends on the entity type:
The Aadhaar mobile linkage is non-negotiable. If your Aadhaar is not linked to a working mobile number, OTP will fail and you cannot complete registration. Update the linkage at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra — it takes 24–48 hours.
2. PAN — entity PAN, not personal
For every entity except proprietorships, the business PAN is required. Proprietorships use the proprietor's personal PAN since the proprietor and business are legally the same person. The Udyam portal verifies PAN with the Income Tax database in real time — if your PAN is inactive, marked deceased, or under processing, registration will fail.
Pro tip
If your company is freshly incorporated, wait 48 hours after PAN allotment before applying for Udyam. The IT-MCA database takes a day or two to sync.
3. GSTIN — when it's mandatory and when it's optional
GSTIN is mandatory if your business is required to be GST-registered (turnover above ₹40 lakh for goods / ₹20 lakh for services, or compulsory categories like e-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, casual taxable persons). Linking your GSTIN auto-fetches turnover data — which the portal uses to classify your enterprise as Micro / Small / Medium.
If you're below the GST threshold (typical for freelancers, early-stage proprietors and consultants), GSTIN is not required. You can declare turnover manually.
Quick note
Once you cross GST thresholds and register, the Udyam portal will start pulling your GSTR data automatically on annual self-update. Failing to file GSTR-3B / GSTR-1 will leave gaps in turnover data and may put your Udyam classification under review.
4. Bank account details
Account number — should be in the entity's name (for non-proprietorships)
IFSC code — used for routing verification, not actual transactions
Account type — current account strongly preferred for non-proprietorships
The portal does not currently verify the bank account against PAN, but the account is part of your registration record and is shared with CGTMSE, banks and GeM. Use the account that will actually receive business income — not a personal account.
5. NIC codes — picking the right ones
NIC (National Industrial Classification) 2008 codes describe your economic activity. You can pick up to 10 codes — but the order matters. The first code is treated as your 'major activity' and drives sector benefits, PSL classification and tender categorisation.
Common NIC code picks by sector

Watch out
Choosing an unrelated NIC code to 'qualify for a specific subsidy' is a common trick — and a common rejection trigger. Banks cross-check your NIC code with your GST and ITR business description. A mismatch can block loan disbursement.
Not sure which NIC codes to pick? Our CAs match your code to your actual GST / ITR description — and to the subsidy you actually qualify for.
6. Investment in plant & machinery / equipment
Self-declare the original cost of plant, machinery, equipment and tools used in your business — excluding land, building and pollution-control equipment. For service businesses, this includes computers, servers, office equipment, software licences (capitalised), furniture used for delivery, and any other depreciable asset on your balance sheet.
Enterprise type
Investment limit
Micro
Up to ₹1 crore
Small
Up to ₹10 crore
Medium
Up to ₹50 crore
Quick note
The portal cross-checks investment against your filed ITR (depreciation schedules). If you over-declare to qualify for higher subsidies, the next ITR will trigger reclassification or de-registration.
7. Turnover figures
Declare your prior-year turnover (excluding GST). If you have GSTIN linked, the portal fetches this automatically from your GSTR data. Export turnover is excluded from MSME turnover ceilings — a significant benefit for IT services, freelancers and exporters.
Enterprise type
Turnover limit (excluding exports)
Micro
Up to ₹5 crore
Small
Up to ₹50 crore
Medium
Up to ₹250 crore
8. Employee count
Declare the total number of employees (male / female / others split). This is purely informational and does not affect classification — but is used for sector reports, gender-based subsidies (women-led MSME) and EPFO / ESIC compliance checks. Include all employees on payroll, including part-time and contract workers if paid through your books.

Documents you do NOT need (despite what some sites claim)
Rent agreement or electricity bill — address is self-declared, no proof uploaded.
Incorporation certificate — verified via PAN database hook, no upload.
Memorandum / Articles of Association — not requested.
Photograph — not requested.
Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — not used for Udyam (only Aadhaar OTP).
Property documents — not relevant for MSME (relevant for some state subsidies separately).
Watch out
If any 'consultant' asks for these documents to do your Udyam registration, walk away. They're either upselling, planning to charge ₹3,000+ for a free filing, or both.
Pre-registration checklist (15-minute version)
1Confirm Aadhaar mobile linkage by triggering an OTP at uidai.gov.in.
2Verify PAN status at incometax.gov.in (active / inactive).
3If GST-registered, ensure GSTR-3B is filed up to the last finished quarter.
4Keep bank account number + IFSC handy.
5Decide your primary NIC code based on your actual main revenue line.
6Have prior-year turnover and investment figures (from your latest ITR / balance sheet).
7Note employee count split.
8Confirm business address PIN code — this drives MSEFC jurisdiction for delayed payment cases.
Have your documents ready? We file Udyam in 24 hours and ensure your classification, NIC code and bank details unlock the right benefits.
FAQs — Documents for MSME Registration
Q1. Can I register for MSME without Aadhaar?
No. Aadhaar is the only login and verification method for Udyam. If a director / partner doesn't have Aadhaar, designate another eligible signatory who does.
Q2. What if my PAN is not yet linked to Aadhaar?
PAN-Aadhaar linkage isn't required for Udyam, but PAN must be active. If your PAN is marked inoperative for non-linkage with Aadhaar under Section 139AA, link them first at incometax.gov.in — registration will fail otherwise.
Q3. Do I need a separate business bank account?
For non-proprietorships, yes — a current account in the entity's name is required. For proprietorships, the proprietor's personal account works but a business current account is strongly recommended for downstream loan and GeM workflows.
Q4. Can I edit documents after registering?
Yes. The Udyam portal has an 'Update Udyam Registration' option using your URN + Aadhaar OTP. You can change address, add NIC codes, update turnover, employee count and bank details. Changes are reflected on the regenerated certificate immediately.
Q5. Are documents physically verified?
No. All verification is database-driven — Aadhaar via UIDAI, PAN via IT department, turnover via GSTN. There are no physical inspections or document uploads. This is a deliberate paperless design choice.
Q6. What if my Aadhaar name doesn't match my PAN name exactly?
Small typos and order differences (e.g., 'Rohan Kumar Singh' vs 'Rohan K. Singh') usually pass the portal's fuzzy match. Substantial mismatches will fail — correct one document first via UIDAI or NSDL/UTIITSL.
The takeaway
Udyam registration is the rare government process that asks for less, not more. Aadhaar + PAN + a clean GSTIN + correct NIC codes + truthful turnover figures will get you a certificate the same day. The downstream value — loans, tenders, payment protection, subsidies — depends entirely on the accuracy of these inputs. Take 15 minutes to get them right.
