A CA-authored guide to IEC eligibility, DGFT filing, bank certificates, export incentives and annual compliance.
IEC is a 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. It is the mandatory trade licence for anyone importing goods into or exporting goods out of India — and increasingly, for service exporters receiving foreign inward remittance.
Since 2022, IEC is fully linked to the entity's PAN, is issued in a paperless format via the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in), and has lifetime validity subject only to an annual electronic update between April and June each year.
Certain categories are exempt from IEC under the Foreign Trade Policy. However, exemption windows are narrow and most businesses eventually need one.
IEC is a fully paperless process. Only digital scans are uploaded and Aadhaar OTP-based e-sign is used for authentication.
A user account is created on dgft.gov.in linked to the entity's PAN. Aadhaar OTP-based verification is used.
Basic details (entity name, address, bank details, HS-code shortlist and authorised signatory) are filled and submitted electronically.
PAN, address proof and bank documents are uploaded. The signatory e-signs via Aadhaar OTP.
One-time government fee of ₹500 is paid online via NetBanking / UPI / Debit Card / Credit Card.
IEC is auto-generated within hours (typically same-day) and emailed to the registered address. Certificate is downloadable from the DGFT dashboard.
For service exporters and freelancers receiving foreign inward remittance, banks require a valid IEC linked to the current account. Most banks will not release FX above ₹5 lakh per year into a personal or business account without an IEC on record.
Every foreign inward remittance is accompanied by a FIRC (Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate) or e-BRC (electronic Bank Realisation Certificate) which quotes the IEC. These certificates are the primary evidence for RoDTEP, SEIS-legacy and export-incentive claims.
HS (Harmonised System) codes are 8-digit international taxonomy for goods. Every export invoice, shipping bill, Bill of Entry and RoDTEP / Duty Drawback claim quotes them. Choosing the wrong HS code delays customs clearance and, worse, denies you export incentives. Taxpex helps map your primary products to the correct HS code(s) as part of IEC filing.
| Scheme | Benefit | Ministry |
|---|---|---|
| RoDTEP | Remission of Duties & Taxes on Exported Products | Commerce |
| Duty Drawback | Refund of import duty on inputs for exports | Finance |
| Advance Authorisation | Duty-free import of inputs for exports | Commerce |
| EPCG | Zero-duty capital goods for exports | Commerce |
| RoSCTL | Rebate on state taxes for apparel & textiles | Textiles |
| SEIS-legacy claims | Legacy service export incentive scrips | Commerce |
Since 2021, every IEC holder must electronically update their IEC on the DGFT portal between April and June each year. The update requires reconfirmation of address, bank details and authorised signatory. If not done, the IEC is deactivated and any pending customs clearance freezes.
Taxpex updates all client IECs free of cost every year — no annual retainer required.
Change in address, bank, signatory or trade name can be done online on the DGFT portal. Requires the same document set as fresh filing.
IEC can be voluntarily surrendered if the entity has ceased trade activity. Once surrendered, a fresh IEC must be applied for to resume trade.
If IEC was deactivated for skipped annual update, it can be reactivated by completing the pending updates on the portal.
