GST Registration in India 2026 — The Complete Founder's Guide

Thresholds, documents, timelines, penalties and Aadhaar e-KYC — everything a founder, freelancer or e-commerce seller needs to know before applying for GSTIN.

    Share

Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration is no longer optional for most Indian businesses. Whether you sell on Amazon, invoice foreign clients, run a growing service practice, or import goods — your GSTIN is the operating licence that unlocks tax invoicing, Input Tax Credit (ITC), marketplace access and bankable credibility. This guide walks you through every requirement, threshold, document, deadline and penalty as they stand in 2026. If you would rather hand it over, our GST registration service files the application and handles clarifications for you.

Why GST registration matters in 2026

Eight years after rollout, GST has matured into the single source of truth for revenue, expenses and credit. Banks pull your GSTR-3B to approve working capital. Marketplaces require it before listing. Foreign clients ask for it on every invoice. And the tax department uses your filings — not your books — as the starting point for any scrutiny. Treating GST as 'just another tax' is the single most expensive mistake a founder can make.

    Who is required to register?

    • Businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services) in a financial year — ₹20L / ₹10L respectively in special category states.
    • All inter-state suppliers of goods, regardless of turnover.
    • Every e-commerce seller (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Shopify, Instagram with payment links).
    • Service exporters and freelancers invoicing foreign clients — needed to file LUT and avoid IGST.
    • Casual taxable persons (event vendors, exhibitors) and non-resident taxable persons.
    • Anyone required to deduct TDS / TCS under GST, including government agencies.
    • Input Service Distributors and businesses opting for the Composition scheme.

    Mixed (goods + services)₹20 lakh₹10 lakh

    Quick note

Aggregate turnover includes taxable, exempt, exports and inter-state supplies of all persons under the same PAN — across India. Don't compute it state-wise.

    Documents required

    • PAN of the business or proprietor
    • Aadhaar of proprietor, partners or directors (Aadhaar e-KYC speeds up approval to 3 days)
    • Passport-size photograph of authorised signatory
    • Business address proof — latest electricity bill plus rent agreement, NOC, or property deed
    • Bank account proof — cancelled cheque or latest statement
    • Constitution proof — Partnership Deed, COI + MOA + AOA for a company, or LLP Agreement
    • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — mandatory for companies and LLPs
    • Letter of Authorisation for the signatory (if not the proprietor / director)

    Step-by-step registration process

    1. 1Generate a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) on the GST portal by submitting PAN, mobile, email — OTP verified.
    2. 2Log in with TRN and fill Part B of REG-01: business details, principal place, additional places, goods and services (HSN/SAC), bank details.
    3. 3Upload the documents above. File size: 100 KB for photos, 1 MB for proofs (PDF / JPEG).
    4. 4Choose Aadhaar e-KYC for the authorised signatory — biometric or OTP based. This is the fastest path.
    5. 5Application is signed with EVC (proprietorship / partnership) or DSC (company / LLP).
    6. 6An ARN (Application Reference Number) is generated. Track status on the portal.
    7. 7Officer reviews — may issue notice REG-03 seeking clarifications. Reply within 7 working days via REG-04.
    8. 8On approval, REG-06 (GST certificate) is issued with the 15-digit GSTIN. Display it at every place of business.

How long does it actually take?

    Application pathTypical turnaround
Aadhaar e-KYC, clean documents3–4 working days
Without Aadhaar (physical verification)7–15 working days
With REG-03 clarification notice+ 7 days per clarification cycle
Casual / non-resident5–7 working days (advance tax required)

Composition scheme vs Regular — which one to pick

If your turnover is under ₹1.5 Cr (₹75L for services) and you sell mostly B2C, the Composition scheme offers a flat 1% (traders), 5% (restaurants) or 6% (services) tax with quarterly returns and no ITC. Below most consumer-facing businesses cross over to Regular only when B2B clients demand a tax invoice with ITC.

    Penalties for not registering

    • Operating above threshold without GSTIN — 10% of tax due (minimum ₹10,000), 100% for deliberate evasion under Section 122.
    • All ITC on purchases is permanently lost during the unregistered period — a silent margin killer for B2B sellers.
    • Suo-motu cancellation after six months of non-filing under Rule 21 — re-activation is slow and document-heavy.
    • Marketplaces freeze payouts the moment they detect missing or inactive GSTIN.
    Watch out

If you've operated past the threshold without registering, do NOT register fresh and ignore the past. Voluntary disclosure with back-dated invoices and tax payment costs far less than a department-initiated demand.

    Common application rejection reasons

    • Mismatched address between rent agreement, electricity bill and the PIN code declared.
    • Photo or signature uploaded as a low-resolution scan — re-upload in 100 KB JPEG.
    • Bank account in a name different from the legal entity (very common for proprietors).
    • HSN / SAC codes that don't match the actual line of business — officers flag this immediately.
    • Authorised signatory without a valid Letter of Authorisation.

What happens after GSTIN is issued

    1. 1Display the GSTIN board at every place of business (Rule 18).
    2. 2Start raising tax invoices with the correct GSTIN, HSN/SAC and tax breakup.
    3. 3If exporting services, file LUT (RFD-11) for the financial year to invoice without IGST.
    4. 4Set up monthly compliance: GSTR-1 by the 11th, GSTR-3B by the 20th, reconcile with GSTR-2B before filing.
    5. 5Maintain six years of records — invoices, e-way bills, books, ledgers — under Section 36.
    Pro tip

Add your GSTIN to your invoice template, email signature, website footer and Google Business Profile the same day it's issued. It boosts buyer trust and pre-empts the 'are you GST registered?' question.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I register voluntarily before crossing the threshold?

Yes — and it's often the right move. Voluntary registration lets you claim ITC, raise tax invoices, list on marketplaces and look enterprise-ready to clients. The trade-off is mandatory monthly filings even at zero turnover.

How many GSTINs do I need if I operate in multiple states?

One GSTIN per state where you have a 'fixed establishment' or supply from. Same PAN, different GSTINs. From 2026, a single business can also opt for separate GSTINs across verticals within the same state.

    Is GST registration free?

Yes — the government charges nothing. Professional fees for end-to-end filing (document review, application, REG-03 reply, certificate handover) typically range from ₹999 to ₹2,499 depending on entity type.

Can I cancel my GST registration later?

Yes, via Form REG-16. The officer reviews pending liabilities and ITC reversal under Rule 44. Plan for 30–60 days end to end.
