    Visual Breakdown
    Step-by-step calculation
    1. Annual deposit a = ₹1,50,000, rate r = 7.1%, years n = 15
    2. FV = a × ((1+r)^n − 1)/r × (1+r) = ₹40,68,209
    How this is calculated
    FV = A × [((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) / r] × (1 + r)

    Overview

    Understanding the PPF

    Public Provident Fund is India's most trusted long-term, tax-free savings scheme — 15-year lock-in, sovereign-backed, current rate 7.1% p.a. compounded annually. Contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh/year qualify under Section 80C (old regime), interest is exempt, and maturity is exempt — a rare EEE product. Extendable in 5-year blocks indefinitely, with or without fresh contributions.

    This calculator projects the year-wise balance and 15-year maturity for any annual contribution. To maximise interest, deposit the full ₹1.5 lakh before 5 April each year — interest is computed on the lowest balance between 5th and last day of each month.

    Pro tips

    Common mistakes to avoid

    Depositing on 15th instead of 1st–5th — loses one month of interest.

    Withdrawing at 15 years when extension keeps 7.1% tax-free — usually optimal.

    Opening in minor's name >₹1.5L combined (parent + minor) — excess earns no interest.
