Quick answer
The government fee for GST registration is ₹0. Taxpex professional assistance starts from ₹999; signing tools or premises-document costs, where applicable, are separate. Approval depends on a complete application and the applicable verification process, not the fee paid.
GST registration fees in India — the real cost sheet
| Component | Cost | Mandatory? |
|---|
| Government / portal fee | ₹0 | — |
| Taxpex professional fee | From ₹999 | Optional but recommended |
| Class 3 DSC (companies / LLPs) | ₹1,200–₹2,000 | Yes for companies and LLPs |
| Premises documentation | Depends on the arrangement and local requirements | Applicable proof; no blanket notarisation or NOC requirement |
| Aadhaar authentication | ₹0 | Follow the applicable portal authentication/verification workflow |
| Amendment after approval | ₹0 govt, from ₹499 professional | Only if details change |
Application signing and Aadhaar authentication are separate steps. Companies and LLPs use the authorised signatory's DSC; other applicants should use a signing method supported by the portal for their entity. Do not assume Aadhaar authentication removes every signing or verification requirement. DSC prices in this table are estimates, not a government registration fee.
When do you have to register at all?
- Check aggregate turnover, state, supply type and the applicable exemption notification together; there is no single registration threshold for every business.
- Goods-only businesses and service or mixed-supply businesses may fall under different threshold rules. Exempt supplies and excluded categories need a separate assessment.
- Inter-state and e-commerce activity needs a category-specific compulsory-registration and exemption check. Do not assume every online seller must register regardless of turnover.
- Voluntary registration is allowed and is common when B2B customers demand a GSTIN for input credit.
Watch out
Operating above the threshold without a GSTIN attracts a penalty of 10% of tax due (minimum ₹10,000), and 100% of tax due where evasion is deliberate. The cost of not registering dwarfs the cost of registering.
The real cost of a rejected application
The portal fee is zero, but incomplete evidence can cost time. If a REG-03 clarification notice is issued, read the specific questions and response deadline, submit the requested explanation through the portal and track the decision. A notice is not itself a rejection. Check these items before filing:
- 1The declared address and possession type are supported by the applicable premises documents; the applicant's name need not appear on the owner's electricity bill.
- 2Required documents and photographs are readable and complete.
- 3Business activity and HSN/SAC selections accurately describe the actual supplies; they need not literally match the trade name.
- 4Applicant PAN, constitution details and signatory authorisation are consistent.
- 5Consent-based occupation is supported by a consent letter and premises evidence where applicable; do not treat an NOC as mandatory for every rented or shared property.
Documents checklist — what you need to keep cost at ₹999
| Entity | Documents |
|---|
| Proprietor | PAN, applicant/signatory details, required photograph, applicable premises evidence and identity-verification steps |
| Partnership / LLP | Firm PAN, constitution evidence, partner/signatory details, authorisation and applicable premises evidence; DSC for LLP |
| Private limited | COI, MOA/AOA, board resolution, director KYC, DSC, address proof |
Bank-account details are optional in the initial registration application according to the GST portal bank-account FAQ. This is not an indefinite exemption: Rule 10A generally requires bank details within 30 days of grant or before furnishing GSTR-1/IFF outward-supply details, whichever is earlier, with exceptions for registrations under Rules 12 and 16. Check the current Rule 10A for your registration category.
Owned, rented and consent-based premises
- Owned premises: use applicable ownership evidence, such as a property-tax receipt, municipal khata or electricity bill, as described in the official guidance.
- Rented premises: use the rent/lease agreement and applicable supporting premises evidence. Check the registered/unregistered agreement conditions rather than buying unnecessary notarisation or treating a separate NOC as universal.
- Consent-based occupation: use the consent letter with supporting premises evidence. Where no agreement exists, review the specific affidavit/evidence route rather than assuming consent alone covers every case.
Use the GST document advisor and CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST, dated 17 April 2025 for the applicable combinations. The instruction does not establish a universal two-month utility-bill rule or require every agreement to be notarised.
Timeline
| Stage or case | What to expect |
|---|
| Preparation and submission | Check documents, signing and applicable authentication steps; track the ARN when generated |
| Ordinary complete application under Rule 9 | Seven working days for approval where the application and documents are in order |
| Specified physical-verification cases under Rule 9 | 30-day track, including specified non-authentication, risk-flagged and officer-directed verification cases |
| Clarification or additional verification | Track portal notices and respond by the applicable deadline; a quoted turnaround is not a guaranteed grant |
These are conditional statutory processing provisions, not a promised three-day approval. Aadhaar-authenticated applicants can also be selected for physical verification. See CGST Rule 9 and the GST Aadhaar authentication FAQs.
Taxpex tip
Budget for applicable documents and signing tools, complete the portal's required verification steps and monitor notices. Paying a higher professional fee does not buy faster government approval.
What it costs to stay registered
Registration is the cheap part. Once you hold a GSTIN, returns are compulsory even for nil months. GSTR-3B late fees run at ₹50 per day (₹20 per day for nil returns), plus 18% annual interest on unpaid tax. Budget for monthly or quarterly filing from the day your GSTIN is issued.
