Trademark fees in India are charged per class and per mark. If you file one logo in two classes, you pay the government fee twice. The concessional slab applies only when you can prove you are an individual, sole proprietor, startup (DPIIT recognised) or an MSME with a valid Udyam certificate.

    Watch out

Anyone advertising 'trademark registration ₹999 all-inclusive' is quoting only their own fee and hiding the statutory government fee. The registry fee is non-negotiable and non-refundable.

Why fees are charged per class

India follows the NICE classification — 45 classes, 1 to 34 for goods and 35 to 45 for services. A restaurant brand that also sells packaged masala needs class 43 and class 30. Two classes, two government fees. Filing in the wrong class is the single most expensive mistake we see, because the fee is not refunded and the application must be filed again.

Common class combinations and what they cost

    Clothing brand selling online25 + 35₹9,000
    Restaurant with packaged food43 + 30₹9,000
    SaaS / software product9 + 42₹9,000
    Consulting / CA / agency35 only₹4,500
    Cosmetics brand3 only₹4,500

    Hidden costs nobody quotes upfront

    1. 1Examination report reply — roughly 60% of applications get one. Budget ₹3,500 or more.
    2. 2Opposition — a four-month window after journal publication. Defending costs far more than filing.
    3. 3Renewal — ₹9,000 per class every 10 years (₹10,000 physical).
    4. 4Assignment or change of name — ₹9,000 per request for companies.
    5. 5Legal notices for infringement — only relevant after registration, but part of the true lifetime cost.

Frequently asked questions on trademark fees

Is the trademark government fee refundable if my application is rejected?

No. The registry fee is consumed at filing. This is exactly why the search and class selection stage matters more than the filing itself.

Can I file in multiple classes in one application?

Yes — a multi-class application is allowed, but the fee is still multiplied by the number of classes. The only saving is paperwork, not money.

Do I pay GST on trademark professional fees?

Yes, 18% GST applies on the professional fee. The statutory government fee is not a supply and carries no GST.

    What does renewal cost?

₹9,000 per class per mark for e-filing, every 10 years. A surcharge applies if you renew after expiry within the grace window.
