    Overview

    Understanding the GST

This GST calculator handles both forward (add GST to base) and reverse (extract GST from an inclusive amount) computations for all Indian GST rates — 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. It automatically splits the tax into CGST + SGST for intra-state supply, IGST for inter-state supply, and computes the compensation cess where applicable (luxury cars, tobacco, aerated drinks).

GST is a destination-based tax — the place-of-supply rules under Section 10 (goods) and Section 12 (services) of the IGST Act decide whether CGST+SGST or IGST applies. For services with a Bill-To / Ship-To split, use the Bill-To state to determine POS unless a specific rule (e.g., Section 12(3) immovable property, Section 12(11) event admission) overrides.

    Worked examples

    Real-world scenarios, step-by-step

Sale of ₹1 L services from Delhi to Mumbai @ 18%

Inter-state B2B supply of consultancy services.

    • Base = ₹1,00,000 | IGST @ 18% = ₹18,000
    • Invoice value = ₹1,18,000 (no CGST/SGST)
    IGST ₹18,000; total ₹1.18 L.
    MRP ₹1,180 inclusive @ 18% — extract GST

Retailer receives an inclusive quote and needs the base to record purchase.

    • Base = 1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000
    • GST = ₹180 (CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90 if intra-state)
    Base ₹1,000; GST ₹180.
