Proprietorship Registration Documents & Current Account List

Exact documents required for proprietorship registration in India — PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, Udyam, GST and the Shop Act or Udyam proof banks ask for before opening a current account.

Registering a sole proprietorship in India is a documentation exercise — there is no single registration certificate. Instead, you build legal identity through Udyam, GST, Shop & Establishment and bank account opening. Each requires a slightly different document set. This guide is the complete, verified checklist for 2026. Once your papers are in order, our sole proprietorship registration service handles Udyam, GST and the bank formalities end to end.

    Core KYC of the proprietor

    • PAN Card — the same PAN you use for personal income tax.
    • Aadhaar Card — must be linked with an active mobile number for OTP authentication.
    • Recent passport-size colour photograph (white background preferred).
    • Email ID — used by every portal for verification & notices.
    • Mobile number — Aadhaar-linked, for OTP-based filings.

    Business address proof

You must prove that you have a right to use the address as your principal place of business. The combination depends on whether the premises is owned, rented or shared.

    Premises typeDocuments needed
Owned by proprietorElectricity bill / property tax receipt (≤2 months old)
RentedRent agreement + electricity bill + NOC from landlord
    Shared / co-workingCo-working agreement + utility bill + NOC
Owned by parent / spouseUtility bill + NOC from owner

    Bank account details

    • Cancelled cheque of the proposed savings or current account (with name printed).
    • Or the first page of the passbook showing name, account number, IFSC.
    • Or a bank statement (≤2 months old) showing account holder name & IFSC.

    Documents for Udyam (MSME) Registration

Udyam is the lightest filing — entirely Aadhaar-OTP based.

    • Aadhaar of the proprietor
    • PAN of the proprietor
    • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
    • Business name, NIC code and approximate investment + turnover

    Documents for GST Registration

    • PAN & Aadhaar of proprietor
    • Photograph of proprietor
    • Business address proof (per the table above)
    • Bank account proof
    • Digital signature (optional for proprietorship — Aadhaar OTP works)

Documents for Shop & Establishment Licence

    State-specific, but typically requires:

    • Proprietor's KYC (PAN + Aadhaar + photograph)
    • Business address proof + rent agreement
    • Number of employees (if any)
    • Nature of business activity

Documents for opening a current account

Banks require two business-identity proofs in addition to KYC.

    • Udyam Registration Certificate
    • GST Registration Certificate (if applicable)
    • Shop & Establishment Licence
    • Proprietor's PAN, Aadhaar and photograph
    • Address proof of business premises
    • Initial deposit cheque (₹5,000–₹25,000 depending on the bank)
    Pro tip

Carry all originals to the bank branch even though copies will be retained. Banks often spot-verify electricity bills and rent agreements.

    Common documentation mistakes

    • Aadhaar not linked to mobile — every portal blocks you immediately.
    • PAN name spelling differs from Aadhaar — leads to rejection or e-KYC failure.
    • Rent agreement on plain paper or expired — banks won't accept.
    • Utility bill older than 2 months — flagged as stale proof.
    • Trade name on cheque differs from proposed firm name — rejected at bank.
    Watch out

If your PAN name and Aadhaar name don't match exactly, update one of them before starting — fixing this midway through registration delays the entire setup.
